When placing a market order with TradeStation, the duration is being set to GTD using today's date. Is this something built into the TradeStation extension, or can I control the order duration type & value?

It will use GTC if you have the "Use GTC" check box turned on in Trading Preferences, or the scale is Weekly or greater for the Strategy.
And I see an issue for placing orders after market close, working on a fix for this for Build 3 of the TS extension.
