I have a question about the data cache: once the data is loaded for the first time it's cached, unless something changes or new bars are added WL8 uses this cache, even if we clone strategies and perform a new backtest/optimization on these clones.

Is that correct? If so it's convenient to use a fix date range so the bars are always the same.

Yes, for data providers suporting the local file cache WL8 will uses the cache until new bars are added.

Are you talking about the ASCII data provider cache specifically? Or just in general?

For Strategy window, each window will load its own copy of the data. It will then use this cached data in its own window until you change the data or scale, which will then force a reload the next time you run the backtest.
