What may seem a dumb question but how do I start a New DataSet. I am starting WL8 and using the Free Norgate Data. A simple manual for Dummies may help.

How can you differentiate and write the symbols between ASX50 and ASX50 plus extras?

Please find attached screenshot.

First of all, Norgate Data is not free.

DataSets can have two types: Unlinked and linked. The former are created without binding them to a data provider, the latter are started when you do choose a particular one in the wizard. Provider-based DataSets deliver data from that provider only (exceptions apply, such as Finantic's bestData) while Unlinked can look up for data across data providers enabled in the Data Manager (i.e. Historical tab > check provider(s)).

For completeness I mentioned Norgate Data - Free Trial. I have tried Linked and Unlinked but the steps in the procedure to create a new data set as per my query is still not clear.

The edge given by the built-in Norgate DataSets is that they're survivorship bias free when used as is. Are you trying to mix symbols from different indices in a custom created DataSet?

The concept of checkmarks to enable/disable data providers is documented in Help > Data Manager > Historical Providers.

- The (current) ASX50 is the S&P ASX 50 DataSet
- The ASX50 "plus extras" the S&P ASX 50 Current & Past

These DataSets are shown in your image. What's the problem exactly? What do you need to do?

Aim is to create one or more DataSets in order to enter Strategies and Indicators
- so that I can Click on a share and see its chart and strategies
- so that I can BackTest a DataSet
- all that I am interested in is two strategies and two data sets

Procedures I am using but without success:
1 Click New DataSet
- this creates a 'Create a New DataSet box'
2 Enter New DataSet Name eg ASX 50
3 Click Unlinked or Linked
4 Click Norgate Data
5 Next
6 This creates a new 'Create a New DataSet box
- enter the symbols contained in the 'DataSet column' eg S&P ASX 50
- what symbols to enter for S&P ASX 50 plus extras?
7 Click Finished
8 In the New DataSet box under My DataSets have under each other
50 (nothing on the large screen if Click on)
ASX (nothing on the large screen if Click on)
S&P (nothing on the large screen if Click on)
END

The symbols box should contain the symbols, for example MSFT, TSLA, AAPL etc, not the name of the DataSet.

Furthermore, you don’t need to create a new DataSet for the Norgate DataSets. WL already provides them for you.

Norgate's DataSets are turnkey. Just expand them, then double click on a symbol to "see its chart and strategies". Likewise, simply choose them in your Strategy Settings. There's nothing to create as Glitch said.

Thanks very much - nobody mentioned it was that simple before nor had I seen it in any document!

What about the data for this screenshot of CSL.au?

Is AU data available for your free trial?

Also, did you UPDATE the Norgate data using the Norgate Downloader software? You need to use that Norgate tool to update the data.

For Cone and Glitch the answer is yes to both.

I am discussing with Norgate Data. All data sets from around the world (including a data set I created in WL8 using Premium data) create charts except Norgate Data for Australia. Tried lots of suggestions but to no avail as yet.

I still do not understand what symbols to write in the box of the previous procedure and screenshot I tried.

The symbols for ASX 50 are already in the S&P ASX 50 DataSet, and you clicked on of them in Post #8.

(Incidentally, after reviewing that image again, it looks to me like the problem is that you didn't check Norgate in the Data Manager > Historical Providers. Check it and drag it above Yahoo! Finance.)

So my question to you is, what symbols do you want to put in that box? In other words, what are you trying to do?

Hi Cone. Have ticked Norgate and deleted others as requested by Norgate Data.

Re screenshot #8 of 16.6.23 what is the value of that screen if it does not work ie wants symbols in the large box?

It seems like Norgate simply isn’t returning data, despite giving you the DataSets.

We’ll have to see what Norgate has to say about this.

You're not answering my questions. Last post for me - one of these must the problem:

1. . Norgate is not checked as a Historical Provider.
2. The Data Range you're requesting is outside the range available for the symbol.
3. The Norgate Updater (a separate, stand-alone app by Norgate) is not running and/or has not updated the data.
4. Your subscription or trial does not have access to the data. Did you try any other market?

Sorry that's it's not working out for you.

Can you see any data in the charting software that comes with the Norgate software (not WL)?

'You're not answering my questions'. Cone, I try to answer all questions. It is frustrating for me as for you. I expect a product to work otherwise I will not buy it. Especially when some of my questions are not answered eg #8 16.6.23 3.00 pm and #8 16.6.23 10.53 pm. Yes you gave a very good reply and answer to the simpler method ie expanding the tree but for interest sake I still do not know about the above.

Re your questions:
1 Norgate Data suggested to tick Norgate and delete all other providers in Data Manager/ Historical Provider and Event Provider and update to #37
2 Data Range? tried dozens of *au shares
3 Norgate Data is updated on hourly basis. Other world data also updated auto.
4 Tried Premium Data and it works fine with DataSets in WL8

Glitch, can not see any data in the software. Most is *.COBRA

Hi DIY, when you open the Data Viewer in the Tools section of the Norgate Data Updater do you see data like shown below?

My question to you [was],
What symbols do you want to put in that box?
In other words, what are you trying to do?

But let's go over the answers to the questions I didn't ask.

1. I don' t know what "update to #37 means" but it seems like you've got Norgate "checked".

2. Data Range -
I'm talking about the dates you're requesting. The default Data Range for charts is in Preferences > Data.
You can change it by clicking the dates in the chart's status bar.

3. Sure, but it only updates if you're running the Norgate Updater.

4. Premium Data is a COMPLETELY different product and delivery mechanism that isn't even part of this discussion. It has nothing to do with a Norgate Data subscription.

Let's be clear, Premium Data will NOT update Norgate Data.
Because you mentioned it, it seems like #3 must be the problem.

Glitch and Cone - good news from Richard 'It looks like when you signed up for the trial you didn't specify that you were using WealthLab (which triggers our systems to provide you with a newer version of the software). I've fixed that.' Works perfect after all that drama - thanks again.

For both replies #37 refers to Build #37. I only mentioned Norgate Premium Data to say that it worked fine in WL8 cf Norgate Data.

On a separate note I am still confused about the attached screenshot and the queries contained within.

Whatever symbol is supported by Norgate in your subscription and recognized by their data provider.

Hi Ian, glad it’s working!

You don’t need to create a new DataSet.

Just use the one you see in your screenshot, “S&P ASX 20”.
