I think you're talking about the chart's Symbol Chooser, but what do you mean by switching context in this case?

I think that OP has typed in a few characters - even a space - and then switched to a different window inside the workspace. The dropdown in Symbol Chooser remains expanded.

EDIT: To reproduce it doesn't require entering anything into the field. Just press and depress the Win key with a chart open in WL8.

Yes, I get it. Indeed, it's somewhat annoying when that occurs. It seems we could prevent that if there aren't any displayable characters in the box. Right?
