Another thing to try for you right away is the stunning PriceGrids feature. Open it from the Extensions menu > "Price Grid Editor". Find a chart with rounded top or bottom, select a chart area and define your custom grid pattern. Voila!
You can even edit cells to adjust (or draw it by hand from scratch) in the Pictogram box. No programming required.

Here's a quick example of defining a Rounded Top pattern as a Price Grid on a chart of MMM in 2014:

Using a PriceGrid is the right way to go. Find a good example like this one, then use Tools > PriceGrid Editor to edit/idealize the pattern.
