I'm not sure how to get the two parameters for an EDO dip buyer
- Number of entry orders filled exceeds
- Open positions
correctly.
Let's say we trade an EOD dip buyer like the KnifeJuggler on the SP 100 with 20% of equity. Therefore, 5 trades can be open at the same time.
The following scenario from practice:
Today there are 2 exits "moo" and the system is fully invested so far (5 trades are open).
This means that 2 of the 5 slots become available. Both stocks are sold with moo.
We now have 57 new limit entries. 2 new entries can thus be made.
Finding the right setting for the thresholds is difficult...
Problem Threshold "open positions" - if this parameter is set to 5, it could happen that one (or both) of the 2 new allowed entries will be denied, because the 2 "moo" exits are executed some ( micro) seconds (worst case: minutes) after the execution of 2 new entries.
In some rare cases, "moo" orders are filled 2-3 minutes after the open. That rarely happens - but it does happen.
Therefore, to be sure, I cannot select this setting. Instead...
Problem "Number of Entry Orders filled exceeds"
...I use this setting and enter = 2 for today. Then of course the setting "open Positions=5" wouldn't matter any more (as I said, I wouldn't use it anyway - see problems above).
But entering max. Entry Orders filled exceeds = 2 is just ok for today. Maybe it is 4 tomorrow, 1 the day after tomorrow. And so on.
This means that I have to change/adjust this setting "Number of Entry Orders filled exceeds" on a daily basis.
This is of course possible, but requires that I keep an exact overview of how many trades are closed today at the open. But if you have to adjust it manually every day, there is a potential for errors.
That's not optimal, is it? What do you think about this? Any way to do this besser/more "elegant".
Is there at all any solution, in which these two parameters 1) Number of Entry Orders filled exceeds and 2) Open Positions are configured in a way that ensures the correct number of trades are executed when trading this type of systems?
I think the setting "open positions = 5" would actually be ideal for this type of trading system. However, there is the problem described above that the moo exits are made after the new moo entries. See above.
