How was the Wealth-Lab 100 DataSet developed? What, if anything, do these stocks have in common?

Dear Community, I deleted by accident the WL100 Data set and now I wanted to know if somebody could post the Symbol list or tell me where to download it without new Installation.

Another question: what was the selection criteria for WL100 compared to SP100 or US100?

thx

Hi Gernot,

Here's the latest WL100 DataSet:

The S&P 100 are the 100 largest U.S. companies by market capitalization, and therefore a subset of the S&P 500.

The Wealth-Lab 100 is also a subset of the S&P 500 companies, but was originally created more than 10 years ago by random selection for the purpose of ranking "ChartScripts" at the legacy site, wl4.wealth-lab.com. (However, we're no longer supporting that site nor its ChartScript Rankings.)

When a company leaves the WL-100 (buyout, merger, etc.) it is replaced by the S&P 500 company whose price history is most highly correlated with the exiting stock. The idea is to keep a list of current symbols that alter back tests as little as possible through the symbol changes.

Where can I find an updated list of the WL 100 Dataset?

This seems to be as good as place as any to post updates, but I can add the latest list to the Yahoo! Classification file too.

Before today, the last update I had was this:
CODE:
Please log in to see this code.

But SAPE needs to be removed (buy out) and was most highly correlated with CTSH in the S&P 500, so the current WL 100 is:

CODE:
Please log in to see this code.

Edit:
The Yahoo! Classification file has been updated, and contains this and other numerous changes to Index DataSets.

Thanks for the update. Is there a way we can be notified when a change is made to this dataset?

Symbol Quarantine is telling me that ALTR, ALU, CMCSK, IACI, and PMCS will not be updated and they are in the Wealth-Lab 100 data set so I found this topic. I was going to ask for the current symbol list but it sounds like the Wealth-Lab 100 data set is no longer used for anything so I may be better off just deleting it. Is there any reason not to?

To update the Wealth-Lab 100 DataSet, use the Yahoo! provider's Classification Groups feature: click "New DataSet" > Select the symbols from predefined C. groups > click "Refresh classification". The updated list will be under "WealthSignals". Wealth-Data can take care of this automatically, see my answer to your other question.

I do not know where to find the Yahoo Classifications file. Has it bee updated and where would I find the updated list of the WLP 100 Dataset?

The instructions in my post #12 above are pretty clear. It's not required to find anything, just follow them.

I try to update the Yahoo Classification file once each quarter, but I missed it last quarter. I just updated it now for WealthSignals, U.S., German, Australian, India, and a few other index constituents.

It's very hard to keep up with all the world indices, so if anyone sees errors or has updates for any of the index components, please lets us know and we'll update the list immediately for everyone. Thanks!

I was reviewing the list of stacks in the WLP 100 Dataset generated using #12 above. The dataset generated contains for eg AMCC. This is no longer a valid symbol. How / when are the Yahoo Classifications files updated?

@hplein

Thanks for the heads-up.

From this year up, the Yahoo! (and Nasdaq Nordic) Classification groups are monitored by a bot on a weekly basis for changes to the participating indices (there are dozens) from various sources. While we aim at providing the correct index constituents at the right time, the sources themselves may not always be accurate or up to date. In rare cases like this, some manual effort may be required. You can expect the changes (e.g. AMCC, WBA > GE) to be reflected later this month.

@Cone

Robert, could you update WLP 100 and Dow 30 when possible? Thanks.

If you're showing AMCC in the WL100, you must be using an old classification file.

I just made a new DataSet using the instructions above. Seven symbols no longer exist.

Here's the list of symbols...

Post #12 above is pretty clear on having to click "Refresh classification" before creating the DataSet.

LenMoz

#23
That worked.

Clear, perhaps, but counter-intuitive. What purpose is served by downloading the original list (while having no provision to retrieve interim lists)?
profile picture

Eugene

There's just one list. Your cached copy of the classification file was out of date and you refreshed it. Unlike Wealth-Data which keeps its classification groups up to date automatically by retrieving a copy from our server when WL starts, with Yahoo! this process is manual. You start with the cached copy which can go out of date. Simply refresh the list prior to create a DataSet to be sure its composition is actual.

Will the Wealth-Lab 100 become available with Wealth-Data and automatic maintenance?

I just downloaded the current Wealth-Lab 100 classification list and data from Yahoo. Then downloaded the data from Wealth-Data. There are only 8 symbols not part of the Wealth-Data subscription. The missing are:
QUOTE:
AA CCU CHK CIEN IAC MDP SANM STCN

It would be great if Wealth-Data had all of the WL100 and was maintained automatically like the other indexes. It's so close! Any chance?

Current Wealth-Lab 100 symbols are:
QUOTE:
A AA AAPL AES AIG AMTD AMZN AXP BA BAX BBBY BIIB BMY BSX C CAT CCL CCU CHK CHKP CIEN CL CMCSA COP COST CSCO CTSH CTXS DE DIS DISH EA ETFC EXPD FISV FITB FLIR FLR GE GILD GPS HBI HD HIG HON HPQ IAC IBM INTC INTU IP IR JNJ JPM KLAC KO LRCX MAR MAT MCD MCHP MCO MDP MMM MO MOS MRO MSFT MSI MXIM NOC NTAP NVDA ORCL PCAR PEP PFE PG PWR RHI RL RTX SANM STCN STT STZ T TEL TER TROW UDR UNP VIAC VZ WDC WFC WMB XEC XLNX XOM
