I am transitioning from using WL with Fidelity to WLD now. I have been using 5 minute candles for NASDAQ ETFs like QLD, TQQQ, etc. However, when I try to set up a new data set none of the data providers allow 5 minute candles. Actually, I can't even get daily data.

So it's not clear to me the functionality of this version of the program without the Fidelity data feeds.

Help would be appreciated.

You can get down to 1 minute data with IQFeed. Performance is very good.

Down to 1 Tick and Second chart with IQFeed, to be precise.

How do I get to use IQFeed. When I go to create a new data set I have the following choices:

ASCII files (a blank folder)
Metastock format data
Wealth-Data
Yahoo Finance

None of these provides 5 minute candles. How do I get to these other choices you showed Eugene?

Install the IQFeed data provider.

Alpha Vantage is a free intraday provider (but not streaming). The history depth is not great, but you can move your Fidelity intraday data histories into the .. Data\AlphaVantageStaticProvider folder, recreate your DataSets, and Bingo.. you'll pick up where you left off.

Just follow the links, sign up for a free API key, and after installing the extension, enter the key in the Data Manager > AlphaVantage tab

Hi Cone. Thanks for this. I have the API key but am unclear what to do now. It's not clear how to get started. I also don't really understand your directions above. Can you walk me through a step at a time?

In the link you provided above I click on download and then try to open but am told that there is no available application to run the program. Hmmm. I assumed it was the program.

It's an Extension. On how to install or update Wealth-Lab Extensions, check out this illustrated tutorial and/or the Wealth-Lab User Guide > Extension Manager. There are 3 ways even if something is misconfigured in your browser/system.

Something that I overlooked was that the free plan only allows for 5 API requests per minute. That's fine to update charts on-demand, but certainly won't work with the Data Manager. Their Premium Plans start at $30/month for 30 API requests per minute. Even only using 1 thread, that probably won't not be enough to support Data Manager updates, so you'd have to go with the $50/month plan for 120 requests/minute. IQFeed is about double that, but you get streaming too.

Anyway, if you want to continue with AV and check out the free data on-demand...

Install the extension and then do the Setup described here:
https://www2.wealth-lab.com/WL5WIKI/AlphaVantageProvider.ashx - read this to the bottom!

I don't have more time right now (sorry!) but once you've installed the provider, just create a small DataSet (5 symbols) and update it. Work with that for now and if you're interested in a premium option, then we can work on moving your Fidelity data over.

Hi. I am trying to install alpha vantage but am having difficulty. I have found it on the browser. When I say download it says it is searching for local extensions. Then it brings up a screen for me to log in to Fidelity. But this is an old screen and when I do so gives me a strange error message. At one point I was able to get alpha vantage on the screen of the extension manager. It said I needed to restart Wealth lab for it to work. I did this and instead of alpha vantage there is now something foaled TASC Magazine that took it's place. Any help you could provide would be appreciated.

Hi Michael,

There may be a conflict with your old Wealth-Lab Pro installation. To fix it please uninstall WLP first. After that, reinstall the AlphaVantage extension into WLD and see if it appears on the New DataSet Wizard.

Let me try that.

WLP was still on the computer. So we shall see. That does make some sense. M

His again. OK, I am still having problems getting alpha vantage installed and working, I go to the extensions site on firefox and download. I then save as file and move the file into the extension manager window. It tells me I need to restart WLD to finish the installation. I quit and then click to open. I get a screen showing alpha vantage as 'succeeded' and a button to bottom right saying start wealth-lab. WLD opens up and voila, no sign of alpha vantage at all.

So now what? M

Now Create a DataSet and Select Alpha Vantage. Remember, unless you have a Premium (paid) subscription) you can only request 5 charts per minute. You can create a larger DataSet, but just enable File > on-demand data and make chart requests ... look at each chart at least 12 seconds before switching symbols :)

Aside: Did that last scaling solution work for you? I'm eager to know!

Yes Eugene's suggestion related that in properties/compatibility I click on change high dpi settings and set the drop down button to system enhanced. This made the screen in WLD go normal finally.

Re Alpha vantage this time when it said you already have an updated version I clicked cancel instead of OK and this kept the extension on the screen. I did in fact set up a data set of the ETFs I am interested in TQQQ and SQQQ. But now it says no data available. I am gathering then that these stocks are not available in alpha vantage. What does it cover then as these are typical ETFs related to nasdaq?

Forget what I just said. I had not entered the API key which I just did and now is all working good!! Yeah!! Thanks to you and Eugene. M

Again all is working well. I am back to where I was before. Actually this version of the program seems better in some ways. The chart colors and styles buttons works better than before. The screen itself lets you pull the edge close to the data sets which was not possible before. Small things but made a difference. M

Great news! Really there should be nothing different about the U.I., but the difference is likely due to scaling work around - glad you like it more! :)

Yes good news.

However, there is one other issue I just discovered. At the end of the day I went to update charts and hit streaming on the chart. It tells me that no streaming provider is selected. Please select one in preferences. I go there and the only choice is yahoo which does not have 5 minute data. I set these charts up with alpha vantage so I would think it would show up but it does not. What to do?

Also in preference is a list of streaming ticker symbols DJI, IXIC and SPX. I am not sure if the symbols I want to use need to be here or not?

Install IQFeed extension as the streaming provider. AlphaVantage does not support streaming.

I don't understand. You can't get this to update stocks from day to day? IQFeed is $92 per month which is a bit hefty.

Sure you can. Yahoo EOD data is free. A dozen of other EOD-only sources (part of them are streaming enabled) are also free. Intraday data most always costs money. Streaming intraday data cost money, too. Although AlphaVantage offers a premium plan, their intraday data becomes available several hours after the market close (not during the market session) and there's no streaming data in principle. So in your case, IQFeed is the equivalent of Fidelity static and streaming data with proven quality record.

IQFeed's $92 a month is only a fraction of what Polygon offers (recommended by AlphaVantage's to get streaming intraday data; no WL data provider exists) i.e. $199. Fundamental data by a company like Zacks may cost $2,400 a year alone (fortunately, Wealth-Lab has more free alternatives to compensate for loss of Fidelity's fundamental data):

Thanks for this. I am not concerned about updates during the day. End of the day data is fine but I need five minute candles. Yahoo does not provide this. Your map does not indicate the type of data provided - eg. just daily, hourly, down to one minute. So it's hard to know if any of these are useful or not. So it's unclear to me what you are saying in terms of what I need.

The only free source of intraday data is AlphaVantage. But it makes little sense due to limitations, the most serious being 5 data requests per minute and 500 requests a day to boot. The historical data range is limited too. For 30$ a month per its cheapest Premium plan, it would make much more sense with 30 requests per minute.

Eugene,

I need 15 minute intra-day (doesn't have to be live but maybe 20 minutes old etc) data for TQQQ - are there any free providers that I can use? I don't need anything faster than 15 minutes - what do you reccomend?

Thanks
