When I try to short a stock I get an error message. When I short the same stock using the Fidelty website there is no problem.

0: Error(s): (013976) The position to Sell was not found or not available. Please review the following: Positions - Verify that the account selected still holds the security you are attempting to sell. Verify the position is held in the selected trade type (cash or margin). Verify the number of shares held in the security. If necessary, edit the attempted order to reflect the same account, trade type and security as shown in Positions. Orders - Verify that you do not have any open, filled, or partially filled orders for the same security. Please review the Orders screen for the account. If there are any open, filled or partially filled sell orders for the same security, you may need to adjust your order. Refer to online help from the Orders screen for instructions on attempting to cancel or cancel and replace orders.

1. Have you followed all these suggestions?
2. If yes, please report your Fidelity order/login/data issue directly into Fidelity phone support.
Thanks.

Ok here is what I think is going on. You recall that the cover buy orders were being sent as buy orders (which I reported). This problem has since been fixed. I now believe that the short orders are now being sent as sell orders. You guys need to test this for yourselves it's not my responsibility.

If this is the case who is going to take responsibility for the enormous cock-up, and how long will it take to get fixed!!

@cone I upgrade to the latest version on Friday. I was able to short stocks, but I think the problem might be with "Hard To Borrow" stocks. While Fidelity does not often have stocks that fall into this category when they do WLP issues an error message. I can, however, short these stocks via the website.

We investigated and discussed this HTB issue a couple years ago. Since WL Pro is a more direct trading experience and cannot (or will not) produce the preview screen with the necessary information (the rate and avg interest cost per day, etc) for a HTB trade, the instructions for customers was to use fidelity.com.

I've had this happen many times over the years using Fidelity, almost always with millions of short shares available. You try to place the order with Wealth-Lab, and get the error above. Then you look in Active Trader Pro, and it shows there are millions of short shares available, so you place the order manually with no problem. It's pointless to ask Fidelity anything about Wealth-Lab - it's a total black hole.
